New Original Song 'Warplane'

New Original Song 'Warplane'

WARPLANE

Written by Matt Johnson & Ian Markx

I’m really excited to be releasing a brand new original song; I really love making covers but nothing beats releasing your own music. My new track is called ‘Warplane’ and it’s the third single I’ve released from my debut album ‘Chaplin Road’. I have decided not to release my album in one go and instead I’m releasing one track at a time then the album is scheduled to be released at the end of the year.

I co-wrote the single with my buddy Ian Markx; Ian is a great songwriter and we’ve wrote many songs together. Ian come up with the title ‘Warplane’. What does ‘Warplane’ mean I hear some of you saying? If you can imagine people during the 1940s World War when the planes would fly over the channel to go and fight and defend the people. Imagine a person on a mountain side looking up at the planes above, all they see from the ground is the wings of the plane, their thought could be that those wings are keeping them safe, warm and free. ‘Warplane’ is being used in my track as a ‘simile’ for describing ‘Love’. Incase you need to dust up on your english literature a simile is ‘Like’ or ‘As’. Example, strong as an elephant, hot like hell…or in my case ‘Like a warplane’, ‘I will keep you safe’ like a warplane! Sometimes it’s nice to explain what the song means especially for people who english is not their first language.

The track was written a few years ago and I decided to make it in to a finished production in February 2017. The producer on this song is a guy called ‘Jay Reynolds’, he has done some amazing production work and mixes for big names such as ‘The Vamps’ and ‘Dua Lipa’ so it was fair to say I was in safe hands! I have been recording so much at home over the last couple of years so I tracked the vocals in my own studio at home which was nice, this means zero pressure and I could just take my time and get the song right! Jay did all the mixing, production and mastering. My long-term guitarist ‘Bjorn’ also played on the track, I had some real strings played by a guy called Pete Whitfield. Some extra backing vocals from my good friend Sarah, my word that girls got some vocals!!

I maybe doing an official video to the track at some point but for now I’m just releasing it on digital platforms alongside some online PR.

MTV Cover Of The Month WINNER!!

MTV Cover Of The Month WINNER!!

MTV Cover Of The Month Winner March 2017

I could not believe it when I got a phone call from New York and they said 'Matt Johnson' has been selected by MTV & Julia Michaels as the winner of March's 'Cover Of The Month'. I nearly didn't enter as I just presumed from thousands of people I wouldn't stand a chance! Just goes to show you have to be in it to win it! The cover was a song called 'Issues' by a relatively new artist called Julia Michaels. Julia Michaels is new to the public eye but not to music, infact Michaels has pended some global hits as a writer for acts such as Justin Bieber, Little Mix and so many others. So it was pretty fulfilling for myself to be selected by her as the winner, gaining some recognition and appreciation from your peers is always a great feeling!!

Check out this cool video trailer MTV shared across social mediaIf you want to watch the full video you can by going to my YouTube channel here

It was amazing to get some worldwide free PR from MTV. The song was aired across MTV channels internationally.

Thanks to everyone who voted from me across social media!

ED SHEERAN
CASTLE ON THE HILL

ACOUSTIC LIVE & UNPLUGGED

Castle on the Hill is one of Ed Sheeran’s two brand new tracks released in January 2017 from his upcoming third studio album. Sheeran chose to return with not one but two brand new tracks, ‘Shape of You’ and ‘Castle On The Hill’. The meaning behind Castle on the Hill refers to paying homage to Suffolk, England-where Ed Sheeran grew up. The castle on the hill Ed speaks about is a real structure in Framlingham, Suffolk.

The songs were posted on streaming and download services in the early hours of Friday morning, with Sheeran commenting: “Hello 2017! I’ve been working hard on the new material and I hope you can be as excited about it as I am. I really wanted to show two different sides to my music that I’m equally as passionate about and I just knew I wanted to roll with two songs at the same time. I’m absolutely buzzing to be back.”

I am a big fan of Ed and have been eagerly awaiting his new music, I hope you all enjoy my version!

Kathleen - Catfish And The Bottlemen - Acoustic Cover

Kathleen - Catfish And The Bottlemen - Acoustic Cover

KATHLEEN - ACOUSTIC

This week I chose to cover the Catfish and the Bottlemen track ‘Kathleen’; I am a big fan of the band and interestingly they were actually formed in Llandudno (North Wales) which is close to where I am from! Kathleen is a song from the bands debut album called “The Balcony” released in September 2014 which has very recently gained Platinum Sales in the UK.

I decided to create a more acoustic vibe to the track and I am pleased with the results, the concept for Kathleen was based upon lead singer Van McCann singing of a girl who provokes tug-of-war of feelings in him. I think they are a really talented band and this song is not as well known as some of my other covers so I hope you all enjoy it!

The track is also on Apple Music, Spotify, Amazon, Deezer, Google Play and every other digital retailer. Checkout the video below.

I had an amazing time filming my music video for ‘Still In Love With You’, this was my second music video directed by Jessica Hughes. My second original music video is finally out on YouTube. Still In Love With You was the first song I've written completely on my own so I'm extremely proud of it. When I record a cover song I just make a small low key video at home but I like to try and do something a little extra special for my original stuff.  You can watch the video here. Cold Water - Acoustic Cover

Cold Water - Acoustic Cover

This week I decided to record a video to my acoustic version of Justin Bieber and Major Lazer number 1 hit, Cold Water. Achieving Platinum sales in 9 countries Worldwide, Cold Water topped the UK charts in July 2016, ending Drake’s hit ‘One Dance’ fifteen-week stint at Number 1.

Cold Water has also been a very successful track for me on Spotify; only released in mid-October it has already surpassed 33,000 streams. Following the success of my last video on YouTube, I have chosen to continue with the simplicity of filming, it would be great to get your feedback and any suggestions for my future releases, hope you enjoy!

Treat You Better - Acoustic Cover Video

Treat You Better - Acoustic Cover Video

This week I decided I was going to create a video for my cover version of ‘Treat you better’ by Shawn Mendes. I released the track on streaming sites including Spotify and Apple Music back in July and it has been a huge success! In only a couple of months the track has achieved more than 235,000 streams on Spotify alone!

I have been heavily researching YouTube and how to create content that is both engaging and interesting, in turn building your channel and getting new fans to hear your music. I decided that for the first time since uploading videos to YouTube I was going to trial a new way of shooting the video and aiming to keep it as minimalistic and engaging as possible. We shot the video only using two different camera angles; I must admit I was nervous when I began editing the video that it was too simplistic but so far the feedback has been exceptional so it’s given me some food for thought for my future releases!

‘Treat you better’ is one of my favourite covers to date, it was the lead single to Shawn Mendes’s second studio album entitled ‘Illuminate’. Shawn is an extremely talented artist and it’s hard to believe that he is only 18 years old! It’s interesting too that he began his career posting acoustic cover videos, he achieved great success gaining millions of views and followers in just a few months! I am passionate about my music and I hope to be a lot more active on YouTube over the next 12 months and hopefully I will gain some more great fans. I must say that my subscribers are fantastic! They always give great feedback and advice, for this video I asked them to suggest a song for me to cover next, my favourite so far is from Craig Terry who suggested James Arthur’s hit ‘Say you won’t let go’. I will have a new video next week so I look forward to sharing it with you all.

Get Over You Behind The Scenes Photos

Get Over You Behind The Scenes Photos

It's hard to explain how fun it is shooting a music video! I have been making my own videos on YouTube for a while now but it's been over a decade since I shot a professional video with a production team. The video for 'Get Over You' was directed by Jessica Hughes and she did a great job. It's unbelievable how much planning goes into a video, finding locations and getting actresses, actors and the crew sorted is no easy task.

Planning the story and making sure it all runs smoothly on the day is difficult. The video shoot was over 3 long days and Jess and her team worked relentlessly. I would advise any musician out there wanting to make a professional music video to search for a great director like Jessica as it really matters. Have a look through the photos below and see what goes on behind the camera. Click to enlarge any image. You can watch the final video on my Youtube channel by clicking here.

The Jam Exhibition

The Jam Exhibition

Last week I went to 'The Jam' exhibition in Liverpool, it was a great experience and I feel that The Jam were definitely part of a culture movement during the height of their success. Still loved by many fans today worldwide I'm sure their music will be enjoyed for many more generations to come. Here are my photos I took on the day. My two favourite songs were 'That's Entertainment' and 'Town Called Malice' what is your favourite Jam song? More artists dates coming soon....Click on any image to enlarge.

Matt Johnson Visits Abbey Road Studios

This week I visited one of the worlds most famous recording studios Abbey Road in London. For any musician this recording studio is very iconic, having produced some of the worlds greatest artists including The Beatles who I think have sold more records than any other artist on the planet. I was there to get my single 'Get Over You' mastered. The mastering engineer was called Miles Showell, he has mastered tracks for world renowned artists including Ed Sheeran. Check out my video blog and photos below.
